"Apotropaic Humour in the Culture of Medieval British Isles". Lecture from Rafał Borysławski for Polish Philological Society

Polish Philological Society cordially invites everyone to an open lecture (in Polish) by Rafał Borysławski (Institute of English Cultures and Literatures, University of Silesia) entitled "Kobieta w rozkroku. Apotropaiczny humor w kulturze średniowiecza Wysp Brytyjskich (The Woman Astride: Apotropaic Humour in the Culture of Medieval British Isles)" which will be held at 12.00 on Tuesday, Dec. 20th 2016 in the Faculty Council Room in Katowice (Sala Rady Wydziału Filologicznego w Katowicach, Pl. Guest lecture by Dr. Murat Göç – December 7th, 2016

The Department of Postcolonial Studies and Travel Literatures has the pleasure to invite all interested students and staff to a guest lecture which will be given on December 7^th, 2016, by Dr. Murat Göç. The lecture entitled Masculinity and/in Literature will start at 11.30 in room 2.23.

Dr. Murat Göç received his PhD degree from Ege University in Izmir, Turkey. He is currently teaching American and British literature and theory of culture and literature at Pamukkale University in Denizli, Turkey. His areas of interest include critical studies, cultural studies, contemporary American literature, and gender studies, masculinity studies in particular. Dr. Göç is a member of The Initiative for Critical Studies of Masculinities which organizes workshops and academic meetings, publishes a biannual journal, and tries to encourage young scholars to contribute to the critical studies of masculinities.

Writing Centre resumes its activities in the year 2016/17

We are happy to announce that the Writing Centre has resumed its work in the new academic year. The Writing Centre services are available to all students seeking help with writing in English. Our tutors offer assistance with academic and creative writing, stylesheet use, style and grammaticality and more. Every student can arrange a consultation with a tutor via email.

Apart from offering help with writing, last year the Writing Centre created the new stylesheet for students of IECL studies, held a short story contest, published the first issue of the Wricent Magazine and organised three anti-plagiarism campaigns. This year we are planning to hold another contest, publish more issues of the magazine and launch more anti-plagiarism campaigns; we are also planning some new things -- more details coming soon.

Free Word Centre is a London organisation working at the intersection of culture and politics – its motto is "Words change lives”. One of the elements of its programme is a year-long literary translation residence, which was awarded this year to a graduate of the Institute of English Cultures and Literatures, Marta Dziurosz (translator, cultural curator, also working at the Pan Macmillan publishing house). Everyone is welcome to join the seminar at which Marta will speak about her experiences of organising literary events which have a direct relationship to politics, and encourage the participants to consider doing the same in Poland.
