The Finals of the 5th edition of the Contest "Dscover Canada 2018”

The Finals of “Discover Canada 2018” will take place in the Municipal Culture Centre in Żory in April 12th – 13th 2018.

On the first day of the contest the finalists will be taking an oral exam and will deliver a multimedia presentation on the topic “The role of museums and galleries in the representation of Canada.” The best presentation will be repeated before the audience during the Award Ceremony next day. Dr Ewa Urbaniak-Rybicka from the Polish Association for Canadian Studies will give a lecture entitled ‘Gods, Victims and Essential Others: Animals in Canadian Literature.’

 

 

The contest Discover Canada is a joint project of the Department of American and Canadian Studies, Institute of English Cultures and Literatures, University of Silesia in Katowice and Liceum Ogólnokształcące im. Karola Miarki in Żory, initiated in 2014 by dr hab. Eugenia Sojka. The coordinator of this year’s contest is dr Sabina Sweta Sen-Podstawska. The patronage of the 2018 contest was accepted by the Canadian Embassy in Poland, the Polish Consulate in Toronto, the Polish Association for Canadian Studies, the President of the University of Silesia Prof. dr hab. Andrzej Kowalczyk, the President of the City of Żory, and the Chief Education Officer in Katowice. Sixteen students representing schools from all over Poland, selected from 737 participants in the first stage of the competition and 60 in the second stage, will be competing for such attractive prizes as the admission to the Institute of English Cultures and Literatures, University of Silesia, books sponsored by the Canadian Embassy in Poland, and high financial awards funded by the President of Żory City – total of 6000 PLN. 5083 students from all over Poland participated in the five editions of the contest, many of whom decided to study at the University of Silesia, encouraged by the variety of promotional activities during the three stages of the contest.
